The National Juvenile Outdoor Track and Field championships continued last weekend last in blazing sunshine in Tullamore, with the U13-19 individual championships programme held over two days. Once again there were some fantastic medal winning performances from Galway athletes and clubs. Galway City Harriers’ athletes secured an eleven-medal haul over the two days of competition, including six golds. On Day one, the Saturday, the club secured a hat-trick of golds, which began when U17 athlete Eimear Rowe followed up a solid win in her heat, to storm to victory in the final with a blistering 57.96second clocking to secure victoryover400m. The hugely talented Robert McDonnell won gold in the U18 Boys 400m final, with his winning 49.9second time and clear winning margin, signs of great form ahead of his international stage appearance this week in Baku in the EYOF Games. Day two of the National Juvenile Outdoor Track and Field championships were held on Sunday last in Tullamore, with the U13-19 individual championships taking place. Yet again there were some fantastic medal winning performances from Galway athletes and clubs. Galway athletes’ really impressed over hurdles, with seven medals across the sprint hurdle disciplines. Ella Farrelly of Craughwell AC got the day off to the best possible start with a superb victory in the U13 Girls 60m Hurdles in a flying time of 9.98 seconds, Caoimhe Farrell of Loughrea AC followed up with a bronze medal in the U15 Girls 75m Hurdles and Chloe Casey of GCH secured silver in the U18 Girls 100m Hurdles in a dramatic photo finish. Darragh Fahy of Loughrea continued his incredible season withvictory in the U13 Boys 60m Hurdles in a fast 9.52. Richard McGrath of GCH won bronze behind Fahy. Day two of the Connacht Championships were held on Saturday 15th June last in Sligo IT with the U14-19 Juvenile events and the Adult Championships taking place. GCH athletes reaped the rewards with several gold medal winners and qualifiers for the Nationals after a very successful outing across the board. Conor Hoade excelled as he won triple gold for GCH with strong performances to take gold medals in the U16 Boys 100m hurdles, the 250m hurdles and later followed this up with a jump of 5.79m to win the long jump. There were also several double gold winners for the city club, via Seren O’Toole, who won the U18 400m hurdles and 400m, Chloe Casey won the U18 Girls 100m hurdles and the long jump. The very consistent Barry Murphy won both the U18 boys 800m and 1500m, and Conor Trehy won gold in both the Long jump and Triple jump at U17 Boys’ level.
